The Crown of Hanover
Made of gold and set with emeralds, this crown was made for the marriage of Crown Prince George to Princess Marie of Saxe-Aitenburg in 1843. The crown jewels have had a chequered life, including belonging at one time to the King Georges I, II, lIl and IV and William IV, - Kings of England, who were also the kings of Hanover. However this changed when Queen Victoria came to the throne of England as, in Salic Law, a woman could not rule Germany.
